binman : glad to refresh your memory !
kaizen7 : thanks for the info that hotel Majapahit has now become an MGallery affiliated hotel! This is new to me.
I have always drooled for an opportunity to stay there when it was branded as Mandarin Oriental Majapahit but the price was very exoticly priced. Almost eyewatering ! Eventually it left Mandarin Oriental and became independant and that's when the price became more affordable.
We stayed in the heritage suite and it was actually quite nice. It impressed me how big the hotel was in grounds whilest from the street the entrance looks quite small and not in proportion with the amount of rooms hidden behind. Most funny thing is that when telling locals we would be staying there, everytime they would discretly ask if we noticed anything "otherwordly"
Actually our driver in Yogja was also a bit curious if we noticed something from the "great beyond" at the Phoenix hotel.....
Made a good conversation with my lads though whom are much into the supernatural and the Ghost Adventures show.
It seems locals are always associating older heritage hotels with additional "spooky" features .....
on a sidenote : yes the Mgallery St.Moritz Queenstown NZ is such a delight, walkable to town, excellent views, perfect ambiance
Goldorak : only because of your advice, we decided to give it a try!
We were looking for Yogjakarta hotels with windows / balconies for fresh air
nicotine addiction and your pictures swayed it into a positive decision. We were looking at the Marriott and although new, after skimming through reviews, no mention of open windows or balconies at all.
And then the heritage feeling of tempo doeloe at the Phoenix hotel cemented the choice.
Glad we took the chance !
