I have intentionally booked trips >6 months out with nonsensical double connections including overnight stopovers because they were cheapest. Once the inevitable schedule change occurs they usually put me on the nonstop automatically. If I prefer something else, it's a simple phone call or DM on Twitter. They will not ask for any kind of fare difference.
Same for me. In the case of some massive changes, I’ve been able to change the destination airport to reduce layovers (a non co-terminal change) / work around changes in my own plans. That type of change is usually followed up with a “this is your one free change and you can’t change your destination again” comment.
