There are enough people who do not walk away that it pays Marriott to subsidize rooms.
Of course anybody who has done any research knows that you can buy legacy weeks at a 30-99% discounts depending on the week (some low season weeks are $1 because people don't want to pay maintenance anymore). Now to be fair Hawaii timeshares tend to hold their value better than most, but still cheaper to buy resale.
