I’ve stayed at the Courtyard by the train station which is certainly central to everything but not in the best area. Also Le Meridian right across from the train station.
The public transportation system is easy to navigate, efficient (it’s Germany) and safe. I wouldn’t hesitate to use it.
We stayed at the Le Meridian. It was nice. Cheap on points but that was before variable pricing. Plus easy access to the public transport. Easy to/from airport by train.
Great suggestions here. Agree with all. I like Augustine Keller even in winter, less crowded.

BMW is accessible by public transport, but you must make reservations.
While I have not been, the oldest brewery in the world is just outside of Munich and reachable by public transport.
