But an easier approach is to run (don't walk) to the cow's fabulous PNR viewer tool, described here:

You should see your current booking and also the J request there, I believe the J upgrade request will show as a status of "HN" (holding need). If you see that, it will confirm you're on the waitlist.
Running down this rabbit hole recently.
Flight stopped showing Waitlisted.... along with other weirdness on the App and Website. Now today it has popped up again.
2 bookings that show Waitlisted and I can see the points on hold in account, but both show HK not HN on the Cowtool.
Will see what happens.
