In many cases staff also share tips. So if you give the maid something, she will throw it in the big basket.
I think this is clearly an American thread and one of the big problems I have with the North American hospitality industry. Someone received extraordinary service and thinks about how to pay for it. I don't say it's not justified and I also give tips, but it's somewhat wired for me.
