I would skip United for this trip. It's not worth the extra hassle.

We're flying AKL-YVR non-stop on NZ in December. Completely avoids the U.S. and we got Business Class for USD 2,700.

I don't see how you're planning to use it on that itinerary because it's in the International terminal and you'd be departing from the domestic terminal.
