An idea i have is make a second booking for myself and my friend. Request upgrades for both of us. Confirm then split the PNR and cancel my flight. Would that bypass the system and maintain his upgraded seat?
No, he'll lose the upgrade when you split the PNR. Otherwise elites could upgrade people on any flight, any time, just by booking then cancelling a seat for themselves.
