Not that I don't think BA shouldn't/couldn't have handled this better, but with how many airports and flights have been affected in the mid-Atlantic and northeast the last couple of days, there may not have been any availability at all, even to get one or two passengers on another airline, much less an A380 full. A friend flying from DCA today on AA reported that every flight she could hear/see is offering a minimum of $600 plus hotels, for people to volunteer to bump to flights in a few days. Her flight was completely empty except for her two days ago, and today, 30 minutes from boarding is showing as oversold. And I've seen similar reports from other airlines.
