Responding to your questions here in the eupgrade thread.

1) Yes, it's common. The ability to eUpgrade is based on inventory the airlines sets aside for this specific purpose. If the airlines thinks they can sell these seats, they won't make them available for upgrades. The seatmap/current inventory is completely irrelevant
2) What are you going to contact them about? They won't open up space just because you call and ask. You're waitlisted, that's all you can do at this point.
