Put the QR flights on a free hold (do not actually purchase the award) using the multi-city booking option on aa.com. Note the PNR, and then call AA to ask if the agent can reprice the itinerary as a single award.

One potential problem is the issue of married/divorced segment availability: If QR is only making BOM-DOH and DOH-USA gateway available as single awards, then AA will treat the segments as single awards, and price the itinerary accordingly.

Another potential problem is if there is no MileSAAver availability on the AA flight from the USA gateway to AUS. On any award itinerary involving travel on a partner and AA, the AA segment must be available as a MileSAAver; if it is not, then a separate award for the AA travel will be required.
