This is definitely currently true in my case. I've used several UA lounges, but I haven't really used the actual AC metal benefits.

They flew AC once, some had no issues, many had a subpar experience, got their status, and have used it for lounge access domestically.

I wonder how much loyalty this debacle of a promo actually gained vs how much it cost whoever sponsored it.
I can attest to a subpar experience on YYZ-HNL earlier this year (at least it was a 789 with lie-flat seats). I assume part of the idea was to capture the U.S. to Europe market, because, coming from many parts of the U.S., it should be just as easy to connect through YYZ or YUL as it is places like ORD/DTW/PHL/JFK/EWR.

However, the fares I'm seeing in the markets I'd like to fly are not at all competitive compared U.S. airlines currently, and I'm not a fan of the eUpgrade scheme so far (haven't used a single one to date), so we'll see how this goes.
