Whenever you can get a STARS, FHR or Virtuoso rate it will almost always be better than booking direct - unless you don’t intend to use any F&B and just want the absolute cheapest rate. The benefits of these rates are also generally more adhered to by Marriott hotels than the Marriott Bonvoy programme which is basically a coin toss nowadays.
