The Salt Lake City MSA has 1.24 million people while the Denver MSA has 2.99 million people. Given that population gap, of course an airline hub at Denver is going to be bigger and better than an airline hub in Salt Lake City, no matter who's operating said hubs.
Denver is also the de facto "business capital" for the Mountain time zone (as well as, effectively the western capital of the US: I believe it's still the case that there are more federal employees in the Denver metro than in any metro that's not Washington).
