They do it at EWR. The agent said they were just keeping track of names, flight numbers, and boarding times, if "something should happen".. I was told they also use it to track late selectees so they can't blame the TSA if they arrived late during a civil conversation earlier this year.
Who knows what else they use it for and where it goes -- but that is more or less what is on your BP (name, flight, departure time).
