There doesn't seem to be a similar fare filed out of SFO or LAX on this trip. If there was, it would most likely specifically exclude the 321T.
Also, does AA use fare class to stack rank AS elites on the domestic upgrade list? Is that documented somewhere? I know that AS uses that for their own upgrade lists.

You have to use an SWU, other upgrade cert, or miles and copay still since there are no free international upgrades (except IRROPS or super random ones).

If you plan on using a SWU you may as well just buy economy since it clears into business class. I'm not sure about those upgrade certs that AS may or may not ever get around to issuing but I assume that they work the same way. AA does not count PE as a class of service for the purpose of "next class of service" upgrades.
