I think crossing by bus to JB, I don't need a test (since vaccinated) and don't need an onward ticket? and also don't need travel insurance? Is that right? Or maybe I'm confused.
If you are not Malaysian, it may still be better to have some kind of onward ticket as the immigration officer can choose to deny entry if they are not satisfied that you will not overstay. Maybe book something that can be changed? No testing is required if you travel across the land border. You'll definitely need a rapid antigen test if travelling to Malaysia from Singapore by air.

Or does it need to be through that stupid, broken app?
Unfortunately the app is a must have.

You can try

I was thinking to visit.. just curious about any latest updates on the situation in Malaysian Borneo. I take it Brunei still isn't open and no news on that either? Ideally, I'd want to visit JB or KL.. then fly to Malaysian Borneo.. still not sure what would be the best place to fly into to experience rainforest adventures. I guess Kota Kinabalu.. Ideally, I'd like to travel to Philippines from there. It's ironic how close KK is to Mindanao, Philippines but yet there doesn't seem to be any flight options to Mindanao. Or at least I can't seem to find any. If Brunei were open.. I remember from searching in the past that there were direct connections between Brunei and Manila and Davao. I guess assuming Brunei is closed indefinitely there wouldn't be any options to do the trip I'd like to do.
You may have to go a little further afield from Kota Kinabalu to get to the rainforests. KK is a good place to head towards Mount Kinabalu and some white water rafting. Think the rainforests are closer to Lahad Datu and Sandakan. There are also some orangutan sanctuaries in Sabah if you're keen on that. There is quite a lot of illegal human movement by sea between Mindanao and Sabah. No flights as I doubt there's a lot of tourism between them.
