As suggested in another thread:

Try booking a ticket with points and then cancelling it (there is a 10% penalty for re-instating the points). The cheapest Amtrak fare I know of is Chicago to Summit, IL ($4) so probably cheapest in terms of points (800).

Then call AGR and see if you have a new points expiry date based on that recent activity. The 10% penalty will cost you 80 points.
