I hope this rolls out systemwide! I connect on most itineraries and have been bumped to Y far too many times after misconnects - a major pet peeve of mine. Save the seats for misconnects and furnish upgrades at the gate.
I'm not sure this will solve that problem. Upgrades in advance are still processed like they always have been. This is only for battlefield upgrades, of which there are usually only 1-2 at most on many flights.
