Actually, I believe you can pretty much position the tabs where you want when customizing the toolbars in Firefox. For example, to increase viewing area on my laptop display, I have some of the navigation buttons and the address window all combined up on the top toolbar (the one that also has File, Edit, View Go, etc.), and in the toolbar below that, I have the Google window, new tab button, reload button, and bookmarks toolbar, all together on that second toolbar and that's it. Gives me a little more room for viewing web pages.
