Round trip return a year out

Looking at a yearlong trip from the US to UK. I understand that I can't book the return that far out. If I understand what I'm reading, I can book the round trip and make the return date 300 days or so out there. Then, assuming I buy a ticket that allows changes, a couple of months before that return date I can change the flight to my preferred return date.

Right now Singapore Airlines says there is no fee, aside from differences in scheduled prices for my return date.

My question is do I correctly understand all the above?

Also, is there a better approach I should consider?

And, aside from price increases what other concerns should I have?

Thanks in advance for any helpful replies.
