If there is a risk of overstay you have to go to the local FRRO and get an exit permit. It should not be a big deal for a child, but you should be aware of the issue and be prepared. The list of FRROs are here:

You can contact the FRRO of the port from where you plan to leave and ask what you need in advance.
Thanks a lot for the info. I tried calling the contact numbers for Delhi FRRO office and it was either busy or kept ringing with no response.
I'm not clear how this exit permit thing would work in our situation. Our flight's scheduled departure is 3pm on the 30th day and visa will expire at midnight. If the flight departs before midnight we are fine, but it could get delayed or cancelled at the last moment and we may only be able to get a flight departing after midnight.
How can we go about getting exit permit in this scenario and does it even make sense for this situation. I'm sure other people would have been in this situation before. Hopefully someone has some first or second hand info about it.
