I've reached out on Facebook/Twitter and asked nicely and they've allocated middle seats for us. They have said no once but I think they checked my one world status and I got a message two days later that they had done it.

ChristopherWalken - Typically they need to link the PNRs of two separate bookings to enable the system to see that it's two travellers together which then enables them to book any seats in the middle. So if you do have two separate bookings it does need some human intervention, whether it's a call or email or social media is up to you.
