Not directly answering your question, but there may be a snag in your plans. By necessity both you and your wife will be on the same PNR. If you are not SE (and have her as your upgrade nominee), then unless the rules have changed since the Amadeus switch, only 1 person's eups can be used at the time of booking. So you would have to upgrade her when you arrive at the airport, by which time the space may have gone.
