Two business flights back and forth with United would get me Mileage Plus Gold and Star Alliance Gold assuming the total cost exceeds $7k. Is there something I did not consider?
A couple of minor things. First, the $7,000 is base fare and surcharges only, not including taxes and fees. Second, you need four segments on United metal to gain status. That shouldn't be a problem as long as you fly UA and not LH across the pond.
