In years past, comped nights with a resort fee, and even those without, did count for EQNs. Whatever that loophole was, assuming it had been one, has been fixed, at least in my experience. Comp nights no longer count as EQNs, but your spending during your stay with earn points. Unless you have a host who would be willing to rate your room for $1, your comp nights will not earn EQNs now, irrespective of your resort fee.

Again, as Jerry observed, the way to handle this is to have a host comp the resort fee and keep the cheap room rates; sometimes, at the lower end MGM properties, you can find room rates at around $10 - $15.
And it’s your belief that utilizing an MLife Benefit on the reservation (such as getting them to waive resort fees for being Gold+) would still fully earn EQN? It’d be nice to have an official confirmation from Hyatt or MLife.

I’m in the camp where Globalists should have always received waived resort fees it’s the least MLife could do for their “partnership”.

If they’re going to allow Gold+ to waive resort fees it is de facto giving Explorists and Globalists waived fees as well. However, that’s not a guarantee that the stay also gains Hyatt EQN credit.
