It's relatively easy to find cheap hotels in Mexico City. But you will find that the sub $100 hotels with a brand name are either in Santa Fe, are quite dated or are somewhere you wouldn't want to be walking around outside after dark. That may well work perfectly fine for whatever you need...

But if you want a really nice hotel in Polanco, $200 is the bottom end of the pricing range...

Unless I'm missing something, the Hyatt Regency is pretty much at the bottom of its price range in its class. If you want to go any nicer (e.g. St Regis, RC, Las Alcobas), you're usually looking at over $600 plus taxes (so $700+).
