If you're looking for a diner that's open late, Ken's House of Pancakes in Hilo is the local hangout, and the food is cheap and semi decent, doesn't score high on ambiance though. It was convenient after working up an appetite with an afternoon/evening hike through the lava fields. Good breakfast there!
Updating this... recent visit 2 weeks ago... breakfast food is good with large portions. They make their own syrups: coconut and mango which were good. We ordered 3 pancakes for each of us, the waitress said, are you sure and she was right - and were only able to eat 1 and half.. so 2 breakfasts for the price of one including containers of take away syrups. Staff was very pleasant .. I actually liked the ambience.. it matched the surrondings. They also were only using half the tables as social distancing so a bit of a wait in the morning. I believe the diner is open 24 hours.
