Delta has offered every published status with just card spend for years (and clearly not by oversight: the Reserve status boosts topping out 5k MQM shy at less than 10k of spend to the Diamond waiver is very convenient for DL and Amex), and arguably AA is only giving EXP/PPro-lite status while DL credit card Diamond is full status.
Delta still doesn't count miles for shopping, dining, car rentals, hotels, cruises, vacations, etc., I understand DL has offered a credit card option for years, having availed of it myself to easily maintain my status now for many years, but counting all the other partners beyond credit cards towards elite status still puts AA in a class of its own now in terms of how elite status is earned (not saying it's a good or bad class, just a different class). Under AA's new program earning elite status from credit card spend alone is easier on AA (lower spend required on lower annual fee credit cards). Earning elite status from non-flying activity is
much easier on AA since they will count most, if not all, non-flying activity towards earning elite status.
