This is a more recent quote from the head of the agency (Port Authority of NY and NJ) that owns and operates the airports and the AirTrain. There may be a way at some point to just tap your phone or credit card and pay the AirTrain fare, but the Port Authority has not bought into the MTA's OMNY fare payment system. I'm going to venture that that any change by the end of 2021 is VERY unlikely.
