I don't think you are thinking of that correctly. In your scenario in a normal year (i.e., without the rollover we've gotten in 2021 and 2022) on January 1 Delta would take 50k MQM and give you Gold and rollover the rest. If you spend 25k to get the MQD waiver on January 1, that applies for the status you earn in that year.
