Did you read the linked article? The boys called their mom, owner of the credit card, to talk to the gate agent and prove the tickets and card were legit. The agent refused to speak to her on the phone.
If you are going to give gate agents the power to demand the card, then they need to allow for fixes, if you will. This particular incident is 100% on AC.
