If you need to change or renew a USA passport, try to go in person to a passport agency. For some of them, you need an appointment and might need to show proof of imminent travel (or need to apply for visas) for their expedited service. If you're traveling soon and pay a bit extra, assuming that all documents are in order, you can go back to pick up the new passport book the next day.
