WHO recommended in 2020 to change surgical masks every 4 hours.
If it gets wet, its filtering ability is reduced and it becomes uncomfortable.
Several countries adopted that recommendation.

SUbsequently WHO seems to have dropped the 4h limit, possibly because of the mask shortage.
It is never a good idea to use a disposable mask (surgical of N95) for a long time as virus fragment might get on its surface and touching it with fingers could spread it.
Washable mask have a lesser-know protection rate (hence not allowed on AF), but washing them carefully removes the fragments.

Remember that surgical masks were designed to protect the patient from projections from the medical staff, they are less efficient in reverse.
