I can only speak for Europe and the USA, but my personal take on it is: if you go to a basic hotel in France like an Ibis Styles: everything is about hospitality. In general, as a guest you will feel treated like you are staying at a luxury hotel. By the froont desk, by the restaurant servers (who don't rely on tips at all).
While in the US you must be a diamond to sometimes get to be treated nicely at some of the hotels. And even then you wonder: how on earth can the CEO of this joint be earning $56M a year and think: as a diamond you mean zilch to me.
