I think the UK suffers with a portfolio of more dated properties, albeit many are or have been updated.
The issue in the US is the nickel and dime'ing (just look at the first page of the Hilton board here for several examples), lack of service and the general ethos of "we're doing you a favour by checking you in, now here's the bare minimum and go away."
Certainly not saying Hilton branded properties are perfect in the UK but it sounds like the overall picture here is much better.
Obviously the Middle East and Asia are in a different ballgame again.
