Out of the main 3 (Hyatt, Marriott, and Hilton), Hyatt arguably has the strongest top tier status (Globalist). You earn suite and club passes on your way to Globalist which you can use to confirm room upgrades at booking. A globalist with a club upgrade pass could just use one of these passes for a friend’s booking to give them club/breakfast access. As others have mentioned, Hyatt also has Guest of Honor bookings to gift globalist perks as well.
Hyatt also has the strongest post-SPG hotel points currency. You can redeem on a standard award chart (though peak pricing is coming). You can consistently get incredible redemptions with Hyatt points and it is a very easy currency to top off given how prolific Chase Sapphire cards are.
Conversely, Hilton arguably has the weakest top tier status. Upgrades in the US have been massively diluted with the Hilton Aspire card granting instant Diamond status. Furthermore, Hilton does not offer a method of systematically upgrading rooms prior to check-in (Marriott SNAs are better than nothing). Finally, many people want top tier hotel status for usage at luxury, aspirational properties. IMO, Conrad (like JW Marriott) tends to walk the line between luxury and upper upscale leaving LXR and WA as Hilton’s true luxury properties. Compared to competitors like Marriott, this luxury portfolio is VERY weak, even in world class cities like Hong Kong.
Hilton points are generally valued below Marriott and Hyatt points but are also disproportionately easier to earn. However, redemptions with these points can be more unpredictable as Hilton does not have a published award chart (look at what just happened with the WA Maldives). I would not recommend hoarding any points currency but I think this sentiment is especially true for Hilton.
tl;dr The main benefit of Prive is buying into World of Hyatt. Hilton has many benefits (Ie a much higher points rebate) but also has downsides as well.
Yes, I do care about status or I wouldn't have worked to attain Hilton Diamond (qualified through nights before I got Aspire), Hyatt Globalist, and Marriott Titanium. I think it only makes sense to figure out which status will give me the best experience and return on spending.
Do you know anything about the second room and base points for lifetime status?
