Yes it's very easy to get a local flight from Mexico City to Cancun. Most of the airlines are basic Easyjet type flights but you can get Aeromexico business class for not much more at the moment. Driving would be fine but it would be a 2 day drive, the rental would be expensive and you would get stiffed for extra insurance.
