I don't want to fight the food court crowds in the terminal, and often don't have time for a sit down meal in the airport. To me, the whole point of the lounge is a one-stop refuge - a relatively peaceful and quiet spot to grab a quick bite and otherwise recharge prior to your flight.

I think a lot of people don't realize a member +2 guests at SkyClub is $845 vs $550 for a UA 1K. That is a fairly substantial difference and sure, at that price I would expect a SkyClub to be much better.
A personal SC membership is a choice benefit for Diamonds, i.e., free. Access is also free with AMEX Plat.
DL simply invests more in its lounge product, and the result is one that is far superior to UA's.
