That's what I would do, too. I've never had a problem showing up with two guests in the room when I booked it for one. Where I think people push it too far is when the max occupancy of a room is four guests (for example) and they ask "Will I have a problem if my wife and I and our four kids show up to check in even though I booked the room for one person?"
