Why the MC? I would think if you just go to a reg ckout you would have less of a climb-down if it doesn't work.
If it doesn't work at a reg ckout, the cashier may ask if you want to go get another one, and you can pretend to do so, but just leave.
If it doesn't work at the MC, they may discover it's not in their system and want to know where the heck you got it, while exposing your face to the MC. Lord knows what could happen.
