If AA extends EXP, wouldn't that be a better reason to put all your travel on AC, so you can retain both top tier statuses?

I just don't see the benefit to an airline of announcing early (unless it's prorated, like every month saying "we're cutting requirements by 1/12"), but I see a huge potential drawback of announcing earlier.

If Marriott were to announce that they're extending status, I'd probably avoid Marriott for the rest of the year (unless the property was significantly cheaper or better located), and work on other statuses.
