The biggest problem with the thermal boarding passes is that over time, the printing becomes lighter and the paper becomes darker. After 7 or 8 years, they are illegible.
Another problem especially in COVID times is that hand sanitizer makes the ink run, so make sure your hands are dry (luckily the part I grabbed wasn't the barcode)
