Understood. I just don't think that's possible.

Well, that might be an entirely different problem for you -- I don't know if UA will be willing / able to attach a lap child to a non-UA ticket for the domestic leg of a continuing international reservation. While lap children are free on domestic fares, they're not free on international fares. You might want to ask on the lap child thread.

IMO, your best bets are either (a) drive or (b) try to convince NH to drop the LAX-DEN flight, and then buy an LAX-YYY ticket for yourself and the lap child. (Or, if you want two seats, buy two tickets, one for each of you). If you attempt to buy LAX-YYY as an EXTRASEAT, like on this thread, you will not be able to board your DEN-YYY flight. If you attempt to buy it under your own name, you will probably not be able to scan both boarding passes at LAX, which means you're not going to get your extra seat -- and if you scan the boarding pass for XXX-LAX-DEN instead of the one for LAX-DEN-YYY, your DEN-YYY ticket will be cancelled. If you attempt to buy LAX-YYY in your child's name, you'd run into problems at DEN when you tried to board DEN-YYY, because although you have one ticket, and you only want one seat, it's not in your name.
