My parents were the same way. My mother was even so mean as to insist that if I didn't eat dinner when it was hot, I would have to eat it cold before getting a bedtime snack. Oh, the humanity!

At my high school we used to do Outward Bound once a year. A 14 day hike, sleeping under plastic sheets (it snowed one year, that was the coldest I've ever been), carrying 5 days worth of food and hiking/rafting/canoeing 30km-40km/day. I always remember lunch was a real highlight because everything was canned rather than dehydrated vegetables with rice, or powdered milk porridge. The no-name spam on a Ryvita with creamed corn, baked beans and beetroot was heaven. I can confirm that outside of those conditions, it tastes as bad as it sounds.
It is.

I never would've wanted to do Outward Bound, but if you were an outdoorsy person, I'm sure it wasn't horrible.
