Very happy to hear this. The very first thing I do whenever I get a new phone is disable Hangouts. It takes up a lot of memory, and it is impossible to uninstall with a bootloader. I have never once had any desire to actually see what it is capable, and apparently I am not alone. One less bloatware app for future phones; if only they would allow us to remove it from the existing phones. Running out of space on the primary memory is the reason all of my phones have become obsolete, and they keep decreasing the number of apps which can operate from a memory card. It is really my only complaint about Android, but at least we are allowed to have memory cards.
Weird, I haven't noticed it being particularly a resource hog on my OnePlus 6. I have noticed bugs in the past, though, that required me to clear cache/data to resolve. One particularly nasty one involved being in the process of sending a photo/video right when cell coverage dropped; sending further messages was impossible without the aforementioned data wipe.
That said, my group of friends will have to figure something out once it finally goes away (for instance, we're not too comfortable with WhatsApp due to its Facebook ownership despite personally having an account for international travel).
