Yup....... Star Alliance silver benefits are useless, gold only benefits are primarily airport based (and the extra baggage if you use it).
For the occasional traveler most of those benefits can be paid with $$$ than trying to spend money to chase status (both on the airline and chiropractors office).
I find the loyalty benefits is typically most beneficial with your home airline.

Did another calculation yesterday and no matter how I look at it, for leisure travel it seems to be most advantageous to book based on price/schedule/convenience and pay for "add ons" as you go if you need those for that particular flight.
