I am a Virtuoso advisor, but also have access to STARS and can book through FHR if necessary. I always check all rates and select which has the best value for my client. As for upgrades, a STARS client will have priority at a STARS property over a Virtuoso without STARS or Amex without STARS. In addition, I always call the hotel prior to my clients arrival to confirm the upgrade and let the hotel know their ETA. At time of reservation, I’m also in touch with the sales manager to discuss/email my clients’ needs and set up their welcome amenity. I’ve actually had instances where my client traveled to the same hotel with a friend who booked through Amex and they checked in simultaneously. My client got the better upgrade. Hope this helps.
