I did that a couple of weeks ago with my wife and my trip later this fall. Split it and then ended up cancelling one of them. They told me the primary passenger had to keep the original PNR. But that either or both could be cancelled.

You can cancel just your wife online. Go through the refund process, and there will be a step to select which passengers to cancel.
