that actually is true. they won't issue a bump voucher for more than $500. the limit is 500 beans.
I'd rather have 7 $100 vouchers than 1 $700.
Becuase I try to find flights less than $200 and the residual is "lost," a $700 voucher would force me to by a ticket I wouldn't ordinarily buy anyway.

It's too bad CO doesn't follow DL's model, whereby the residual is reissued in the form of another voucher.
